Colorado
A license is required for a residence that provides room, board, personal services, protective oversight, social care and 24-hour available supervision to three or more unrelated adults. ALRs may also operate secure environments for residents with dementia. Chapter 7 was amended several times recently, with versions effective January 14, 2024, July 1, 2024, March 17, 2025 and July 1, 2025.

Assisted Living Residences (statute)
Key requirements
- Administrator must be 21+, have a high school diploma or equivalent and qualifying experience, and complete 40 hours of administrator training before starting (20 hours on regulations, 20 on operations and resident care)
- Name-based criminal history check (CBI, plus other states if the applicant lived in Colorado less than 3 years) and a Colorado Adult Protective Services database check before hire
- Direct-care staff: at least 4 hours of dementia training (required since January 1, 2024) and 2 hours of dementia CE every 2 years
- Orientation covering infection control, emergency response, resident rights and food safety
